Gmail for your domain

Posted by cy on Jun-29-2006

This is a pretty cool product from Gmail, this special beta test lets you use Google’s webmail service on your own domain name.

For details click here

I apply to test their service about 3 weeks ago, and I just receive a reply from them yesterday that they accepted my domain name chingyih.com to join their tester programme.

I like google because it’s simple. KNN even their email oso so short and brief, nothing inside.

After login, I follow their instruction to setup my account, and route my domain name chingyih.com’s MX record to their server (google mail server). And today I login, the account already start working.

Very simple control panel, not much function you can play around, perhaps it’s still beta.

And now I can create up to 25 email addresses e.g. anything@chingyih.com, with 2GB of space on each account, with google talk & calendar feature for every account.

I created myself a i@chingyih.com, login, and the control panel is exactly the same with Gmail account. I also replaced the Gmail logo with my own logo..

For my free account, I can create up to 25 email addresses.. but I believe I should be able to create more than 25 accounts with additional cost after they officially launched the service for the public. Im not sure how many accounts other testers allowed to create, but when I apply, I just put there ‘personal use’ only. It can really saves me a lot of disk space so I dun have to host my email on my server.

Google actually targetted this service on organisation, but if you’re running a small/medium business with less than 25 staff, will you consider this service (to let them host your email)? hmm… what do you think? All your company’s emails (and accompanying data) are belong to Google..

But hor… Microsoft has this in beta as well. http://ideas.live.com/ it’s called the Windows Live Custom Domains..
